Spain has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia by providing substantial military aid.
Recent Deliveries
On March 4, 2025, Spain dispatched a new shipment of military equipment to Ukraine, including 1,370 C90-CR (M3) grenade launchers, 700,000 rounds of rifle and machine gun ammunition, and light machine guns. These were transported via two military aircraft to a border point between Poland and Ukraine, where Ukrainian authorities took possession.
Additional Contributions
In April 2022, Spain supplied armored vehicles such as the URO VAMTAC and RG-31. Subsequent shipments included M113 armored personnel carriers and a variety of other military equipment, including anti-aircraft systems and tanks. Training programs for Ukrainian military personnel on the use of advanced weaponry, including the Leopard 2 tanks, have also been part of Spain's assistance efforts.
Strategic Considerations
Initially, Spain faced challenges in providing Leopard 2A4 tanks due to concerns over their condition. However, by February 2023, Spain confirmed the preparation of six Leopard 2A4 tanks for delivery to Ukraine, with plans to send more following refurbishments.
Ongoing Commitment
Spain's defense minister, Margarita Robles, has emphasized the country's dedication to supporting Ukraine, stating that Spain will continue to send military aid, including armored vehicles, artillery shells, air defense systems, and fuel. This assistance aims to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities in the face of ongoing aggression.
These actions underscore Spain's role as a key European ally in providing military support to Ukraine, reflecting a broader commitment among NATO and EU members to uphold Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
